To get automatic price updates from the Internet for for stock accounts, you need to set the price source appropriately. This can be done in the new account dialog box, when the account is created, or changed at any time by selecting the account in an account window, and chosing "edit account" from the main menu. Both dialog boxes have a section called "Price Quote Source".
To enable automatic price updates, do the following:
Make sure the "get online quotes" check box is checked.
Enter a valid ticker symbol in the text box marked "Security:" A ticker symbol is the code that identifies the stock or fund - to take a familiar example, International Business Machines' ticker symbol is IBM, listed on the New York Stock Exchange. To take another example, McDonald's Corpororation is MCD.
Select a quote source from the pull-down menu. Currently supported quote sources include Yahoo, Yahoo Europe, Fidelity Investments, T. Rowe Price, the Vanguard Group, the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) and TIAA-CREF. Note that Yahoo will provide price quotes for many mutual funds including Fidelity, T.Rowe Price and Vanguard, and that the quoted prices at Yahoo should be identical to those that may be found at the source sites (otherwise, somebody's reporting wrong information!). If you choose Yahoo Europe, you should append the market code for the security, such as PA for Paris, BE for Berlin, etc. Example: 12150.PA (a Peugeot security in the Paris market). The table below lists the codes for the various markets.
Ensure that the currency of the account matches the source of the stock you have selected. This means:
Quotes from the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) should be in Australian dollars (AUD).
Quotes from Yahoo Europe should be in Euros (ECU)
Quotes from Yahoo, Fidelity Investments, T. Rowe Price and the Vanguard Group should be in US Dollars (USD).
Select the correct timezone setting (FIXME: WHAT IS THE CORRECT TIMEZONE SETTING???)
Instructions for updating prices are found in the documentation on the price editor. |
